Norwegian & OEUK Physicals

The OEUK and Norwegian offshore medical examinations are more comprehensive than a standard occupational health physical. The exam includes:

• Cardiovascular evaluation — resting blood pressure, heart rate, cardiac auscultation, and review of cardiovascular history. Workers with cardiac risk factors may require an exercise stress test or specialist clearance.
• Respiratory assessment — lung auscultation and, when indicated, spirometry (pulmonary function testing) to evaluate lung capacity. This is particularly relevant for workers exposed to drilling fluids, welding fumes, or confined space atmospheres.
• Vision and hearing testing — visual acuity, color vision, and audiometric testing must meet defined standards. Workers who cannot distinguish safety-critical colors or hear alarms may require additional evaluation.
• Musculoskeletal assessment — range of motion, grip strength, and physical capability evaluation. Offshore workers must be able to climb ladders, lift equipment, and move safely on wet or unstable surfaces.
• Neurological screening — assessment of coordination, balance, and cognitive function relevant to safety-critical work.
• Urinalysis and BMI assessment — screening for diabetes, kidney conditions, and body composition. Extreme obesity may affect fitness certification due to helicopter seating constraints and emergency evacuation requirements.
• Mental health screening — evaluation of psychological fitness for isolated, high-pressure work environments. History of significant psychiatric conditions requires specialist documentation.
• Drug and alcohol screening — many operators require pre-deployment drug and alcohol testing in addition to the medical certificate.

An OEUK or Norwegian offshore medical certificate is required for anyone working on or traveling to offshore installations governed by UK or Norwegian regulations. This includes:

• Platform and rig personnel — drillers, roughnecks, derrickmen, tool pushers
• Production technicians and process operators
• Offshore construction and maintenance workers
• Catering and hospitality crew on offshore installations
• Helicopter passengers traveling to offshore platforms
• Marine crew on offshore supply and anchor-handling vessels operating under UK or Norwegian jurisdiction
• Contractors, inspectors, and engineers deployed to offshore sites

Texas is home to one of the largest concentrations of offshore energy companies and service providers in the world. Major operators, drilling contractors, and oilfield service companies headquartered along the Gulf Coast regularly deploy personnel to international offshore installations that require OEUK or Norwegian medical certification. Upon successful completion of the exam, you will receive an offshore medical certificate valid for up to two years. Workers over the age of 50 may be issued certificates with shorter validity periods, typically one year, depending on the governing standard and the examining physician's assessment.

The certificate documents your fitness category and any restrictions or conditions attached to your clearance. Some workers may receive a "fit with restrictions" designation that limits the types of installations or roles they can be assigned to.

Plan to schedule your renewal examination at least four to six weeks before your current certificate expires. Expired certificates will prevent you from being deployed, which can disrupt your work schedule and your employer's crew planning. To prepare for your appointment, bring a valid photo ID, your current offshore medical certificate (if renewing), a complete medications list, corrective lenses or hearing aids if applicable, and any specialist documentation related to pre-existing conditions. Walk-ins are accepted, but scheduling ahead ensures the fastest turnaround on your certification.
