US Coast Guard Physicals

The USCG physical examination is a thorough assessment designed to evaluate your ability to serve safely in a maritime environment. The exam covers:

• Vision testing — visual acuity, color vision, and field of vision must meet specific USCG standards. Requirements vary based on the credential type and vessel tonnage.
• Hearing evaluation — audiometric testing to ensure you can hear alarms, commands, and navigation signals aboard a vessel.
• Cardiovascular assessment — blood pressure measurement, pulse evaluation, and review of cardiac history. Conditions like uncontrolled hypertension or recent cardiac events may require additional documentation.
• General physical examination — evaluation of neurological function, musculoskeletal fitness, respiratory health, and overall physical condition.
• Urinalysis — screening for underlying medical conditions including diabetes and kidney disorders.
• Medical history review — comprehensive review of current medications, surgeries, chronic conditions, psychiatric history, and substance use history.
• Drug testing — USCG-regulated drug screening is typically required as part of the credentialing process. We provide DOT-equivalent drug panels in compliance with 46 CFR Part 16.

A Coast Guard physical is required for anyone who holds or is applying for a Merchant Mariner Credential. This includes:

• Commercial vessel captains and officers
• Able seamen and ordinary seamen
• Engineers, mates, and pilots
• Tankerman and personnel handling hazardous cargo
• Offshore supply vessel (OSV) crew members
• Towing vessel operators
• Any individual required to hold a USCG-issued credential to work aboard a commercial vessel

• Any specialist documentation related to pre-existing conditions (cardiac clearance letters, sleep apnea compliance reports, psychiatric evaluations)
• Your employer's authorization or billing information if the exam is employer-sponsored

The CG-719K medical certificate is generally valid for two years from the date of the exam, though the Coast Guard may issue shorter validity periods for applicants with certain medical conditions.
